Creative writing is alive and well in the Common Core! Journey with Misty and Jerri as they take you through the three types of writing and how creative writing weaves throughout the three. This workshop will be interactive and hands on, providing you with an opportunity to both write and view examples of student work and resources.

  • This will be our backchannel. A backchannel is an online conversation going on while the speaker is speaking. This is a place for audience members to ask questions, share resources and make comments. Today's Meet allows you to save the "conversation" as a link to add to your wiki or blog.


We need a volunteer to monitor pressing questions that come up through the back channel. Questions not answered during the session in person, will be documented and added to this wiki. Resources will be posted to help answer those questions not addressed during our 45 minute session.

Zoo Project: Students write narratives about their own zoo experience then learn about the comparison of zoo exhibits to informational text. The class chooses their favorite zoo animals to research, write, and create projects about.

We have been doing a lot of Main Topic and Detail writing. However, I thought we'd try writing a Reader's Theater using science research.

We were getting a little bored with "Main Topic and add details" writing. I decided to try a writing a shared writing using a curriculum based reader's theater model.

We had already researched some things about matter. And then this Time For Kids came and it was a PERFECT fit!

First, we ask BURNING questions

Next, we did more research, reading TFK's Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Then, we wrote what we learned on sticky notes and put them on our anchor chart.

NOW we had a good knowledge base for beginning to write our first reader's theater!

We wrote this as a shared writing and everyone said each line as this is our first attempt at writing curriculum based reader's theater.

The top video is our 1st reading! The bottom is our 2nd reading!

Informational to Opinion writing: Students discuss their knowledge about sharks. The class chooses two different sharks to research. After creating shark projects students write opinion letters to Sea World, sharing their opinion and viable arguments for keeping the shark in the aquarium or letting them go in the ocean.

Extended Looking Activity using Joan Mitchell's Ici. This was an extended looking and creative response activity I participated in through a workshop by the St. Louis Art Museum given by Mike Murawski at the Missouri Art Education Association. Please find the steps below.
